With 16 grade II listed bridges (many designed by John Rennie), 2 grade II listed limekiln complexes (one at either end of the canal), an aqueduct and 9 surviving milestones, the Grand Western Canal has a carefully preserved rich historic inheritance. In recent years the Canal Ranger service and volunteer groups have made great progress in restoring historic structures at the northern end of the canal.
The design and construction of the canal network in Devon was part of a much larger plan to link the Bristol and English channels. Although this never saw completion, the partially finished version did have a significant effect. Prosperity was brought to the area during the hay day of the Grand Western Canal with the exploitation of local mineral resources. The legacy left today by this grand venture is a stretch of canal that runs from Tiverton to Lowdwells.
There are many associated features of historic interest still evident today. Many of the buildings, bridges and other structures are listed as being of architectural or historic interest, ensuring that the rich historic inheritance of the Grand Western Canal is not lost.
